The Interesting History of Carhartt Clothing

Carhartt Clothing has an excellent reputation today among people who need durable clothes that are able to withstand even the toughest work environment. However, that reputation is partially due to its long and fascinating history. The story of how Carhartt Clothing began this journey and where the company is headed in the future might just inspire you to join millions of others in becoming a Carhartt Clothing fan.

The Humble Beginnings

The company started its climb to prominence in the work clothing field more than 100 years ago. Founder Hamilton Carhartt had a dream of being a successful businessman. He was so dedicated to that dream that he changed his name: the extra “t” was supposed to help him stand out among other entrepreneurs.

Although success would eventually be his, his first endeavor wasn’t clothing. Instead, he opened up a home furnishing business. That didn’t make him though because he didn’t want to be selling other people’s products. Carhartt wanted to create his own product.

The Birth of a Clothing Brand

Carthartt was working in the late 19th century and one of the biggest industry’s of the time was the railroad. And that’s where he got the idea that would later become Carhartt Clothing. A railroad engineer met with Carhartt and talked about the specific needs people had for their clothing when they working on the railroad which was definitely an unforgiving environment by anyone’s standards.

To help meet the needs of railroad workers, Carhartt developed overalls specifically for railroad workers. After the garment’s success, Carhartt decided to turn that single piece into the foundation of an entire business which he named after himself and opened in 1889 at the age of thirty-four.

The Modest Early Years

Carhartt Clothing may have been a hit with railroad workers but that didn’t change the humble start of the business. With only four sewing machines and less than a half dozen employees, the company was limited in what it could do. Instead of selling online and through major retailers, the company sent traveling salespeople around to peddle Carhartt Clothing to the railroad divisions.

Although this method may not seem efficient by our standards, it worked for Carhartt Clothing and helped establish the company as a trusted brand of overalls for railroad workers. As a result, the company continued to grow and to expand into other industries that required durable clothing.

The Present and Beyond

Even Carhartt Clothing was not immune to the devastation of the Great Depression but the company didn’t go under even though it did lose all but three of its manufacturing plants by 1930. Unfortunately, just seven years later the company’s founder and namesake died. Despite his death, the company’s mission remained the same.

Now Carhartt Clothing is run as a family business by the descendants of Hamilton Carhartt and the line of clothing is now found not only through North America but also in parts of Europe where there is also a need for top quality, highly durable Carhartt Clothing.

Finding Fashionable Work Maternity Clothing

For many professional women, their appearance greatly influences how they are regarded by their peers. It’s important to keep a smart, authoritative appearance particularly for women in supervisory or management positions, legal professions or those employed in the healthcare field. Work maternity clothing appropriate for all of these professions makes it possible to maintain one’s professional appearance while celebrating the changing shape of one’s body and the joyful reason behind it.

Pregnancy has enormous impacts on one’s life, some wonderful, some that present hurdles to one’s professional life. One of the most difficult tasks for pregnant professionals is finding work maternity clothing that is sharp and fashionable while still being comfortable and practical.

Maternity clothing often suffers from trying to hide a pregnant woman’s shape rather than celebrating it. Given the nature of pregnancy, there is no reason that a woman’s new body shouldn’t be cause for celebration and there is certainly no reason that a woman with child should be restricted to ugly, poorly designed clothes. There are designers all over the world that work to create fashionable options for pregnant women and many of their creations are affordable and attractive.

Today’s women are attached to their careers and, oftentimes, they are the primary breadwinner in the family. It’s impossible financially and difficult psychologically to give up a valuable career, even for the rather short time that a pregnancy encompasses. It’s also unacceptable to feel compromised in one’s work because of an inability to present a refined and elegant image. Given that many family’s incomes are riding on the woman’s ability to carry on with their work throughout their pregnancy, purchasing clothing that makes it possible to do so is well worth the investment.

Work maternity clothing should be, above all else, comfortable. Pregnancy obviously entails significant changes in shape and weight and the design of clothing worn throughout pregnancy must accommodate this. Maternity clothing, even though it is obviously intended for temporary use, should be durable and of a high-quality as should any garment. Because it may be worn for more than one pregnancy, designs that incorporate timeless, traditional cuts are preferable to ones that emphasize the fads and trends of the current moment. Fortunately, these are all common characteristics of professional clothing, making fashionable work clothing and maternity clothing not mutually exclusive terms.

Because different types of work demand a different wardrobe, work maternity clothing should encompass a wide variety of designs. Many women have jobs that entail working in a office for part of their work week and doing field work or on-site work at other times. It’s desirable to acquire a wardrobe that is appropriate for all of these uses. Sometimes a collection of fashionable suits will be adequate and sometimes a combination of suits and durable clothing for more intensive environments will be called for. Work maternity clothing is available in designs appropriate for these uses and many more.

Today’s women need not give up their employment nor their fashion sense to accommodate pregnancy!

Workplace Safety & Clothing

On an average, an employee spends one third of his life on a job. Each organisation endeavours to provide a safe work environment to its employees. It is particularly important when the work environment is more vulnerable to accidents. Work wear is one of the many aspects of safety at work.

For example, labourers and supervisors working on a road-based project need to wear high visibility jackets to be more noticeable when walking on the road. Construction work sites face a great deal of chance for eye infections due to the presence of dust. In accordance, it becomes important to protect one’s eyes by wearing eye goggles. Likewise, safety wear is desirable when handling a job involving chemicals, toxins or oil. Such workers tend to wear safety glasses, lest they may lose eye sight.

Each item in the work wear is meant to serve a particular purpose. Workers handling or lifting heavy weights or equipment or those working with unguarded machinery tend to wear footwear that not only protects their feet, but also helps with smooth working. Steel blue boots, metal toe-capped boots or shoes with additional puncture resistant soles are some of the varieties that are usually prescribed as a part of work clothes, based on subjective conditions.

Everyone who goes to a workplace is supposed to follow a dress code. The dress code not only represents the profession one belongs to, but has some integral role to play at work. Be it a doctor or a lawyer, a mechanic or a mason – their work clothes mean more than their professional identification. Work Clothes / Clothing For Work

Finding clothes to wear for work is always a dull process. It just is not fun shopping for clothes that remind you of your job when you are not working. There are of course several ways to combat this feeling of despair as you look through rows of black jackets and skirts. That is to abandon the need for the dullness of a suit and expand your thinking to make your wardrobe one that can work from work to play without it feeling bad. That way shopping for work clothes becomes a fun thing – you are not just shopping for something which will only be seen by your work colleagues, you are now shopping for something that can be used in other social situations too.

OK this can be difficult if you have to wear a uniform to work – but then you never have the problem of shopping for work clothes anyway! I used to work at Selfridges before it became all trendy and I had to wear a uniform of a dreadful brown skirt and cream blouse. I hated it so much I used to make it my sole purpose in life to change it as much as I could without getting fired. I wore brightly coloured tights, swapped the blouse for one with embroidery on it, and even took up the hem of the skirt. Surprisingly no one ever said anything but obviously I am not advocating that to anyone.

Anyway back to work clothes. Let’s start with suits. Is a suit essential? I would say not for a woman. I think you can wear smart skirts and jackets and look better than you would if you were wearing a suit. There are lots of smart trousers in the shops and there are a range of skirts that look great on anyone regardless of size and shape. Longer line jackets and tops are back in fashion now too so there is no need to feel self conscious about bits of you being too much on show either. IN fact a pair of line trousers with a tunic or fitted blouse in my eyes looks far more professional and sophisticated than a polyester suit.

The only rule of thumb I would use when buying work clothes is not to wear sleeveless tops or vests to work. That look does tend to say ‘beach’ rather than ‘work’ and unless you have a great body they are not that forgiving!

The Necessary Accessory: Aprons

For employees who cook in a restaurant kitchen or work in the dining room waiting tables, wearing an apron is often a uniform requirement. While they serve the purpose of preventing grease or coffee spills from soiling work uniform pants and shirts, aprons are also a handy attachment to tote customer needs.

For a waiter or waitress, who usually wear just a half apron that wraps around their waists, it’s important that the frock contain several accessible pocket compartments in which to carry necessities for the job. Not only is this convenient for the time-pressed server, but it will also impress a dine-in customer when the item needed is right at the finger tips of their attendant.

Items which should be carried by a waiter in their apron should include an ordering tablet, two or three pens, straws and matches. If feasible, extra condiments should also be allowed for as part of the supply load, like catsup bottles or packets and creamer and butter samplers. But be sure to protect liquid products from creating a mess within the apron–this happens to even the best of servers! Sometimes, in the rush to fill a demanding customer’s coffee cup, leaning up against the counter or dining table causes a juicy explosion. It is best to keep those types of additives in a side pocket where they are safer.

Yet another issue that accompanies server aprons is the attached adjustable ties that are supposed to be secured on the back side of the waiter. As people come in all shapes and sizes, fastening these strings can be a side-show all in itself. Larger waisted people may have a difficult time tying a bow where the two ends meet because there simply is not enough material. Thinner servers may have to wrap the ties around two or three times before accomplishing a bow to secure the apron. A possible solution would be for management to purchase aprons which will accommodate any shape or size or server to allow for a more uniformed appearance of their staff.

Color choices for restaurant cook aprons usually aren’t that significant. The full cover aprons of the dishwashers, fry cooks and salad makers are rarely seen by the dining public. That is probably a good thing; chances are those hard-working employees in the back are wearing everything from sauces to sautés! Choosing a shade for the waitresses, waiters, hostesses and bus boy’s aprons is a bit more unrestricted and allows for a creative presentation which compliments the décor of the restaurant dining room or color scheme of the table cloths and furniture.

Lastly, when choosing aprons for restaurant employees, select material that can easily be washed and sanitized and does not require too much effort for stain removal. Although employees are hard-working and dependable, they also have lives outside of the restaurant that may restrict time for uniform upkeep. If possible, provide at least two aprons to each server or cook.

Fashions That Flatter

Good news for many women is word that looking both stylish and more slim can be easier than you think. That’s important, as one recent study discovered. In fact, the survey by a major apparel company found, almost 90 percent of American women reported their looks determine how they feel about themselves.

Other findings:

- Most women, regardless of age, shape or size, perceive that they have body flaws.

- Sixty-three percent cited their stomachs as their major problem area, followed by thighs (45 percent), hips (34 percent) and rear ends (33 percent).

• These “problems” significantly increase for women who wear larger than a size 10.

- Sixty-five percent described their attempts to control their weight as unsuccessful.

Diet and exercise are the best solutions for looking and feeling better but women have also turned to shape wear, such as old-fashioned girdles and other undergarments for instant effect. One of the most effective yet least expensive is called shape fx®.

Unlike other shape wear brands, it features a unique collection of ready-to-wear apparel with built-in shape wear panels that trim the waist, slim the hips and shape the rear. These unexpected bonuses come in great-fitting pants, skirts and dresses, and are invaluable assets in an extensive swimwear collection. The collection does include conventional shape wear intimate pieces as well.

The designers also offer these five slimming style tips:

1. Higher necklines support and minimize a full bust.

2. Vertical stripes, princess seams and single-breasted jackets provide a slimming illusion.

3. Bootcut pants and flared skirts minimize heavy hips, thighs and rear.

4. Tunic tops stylishly conceal hips and rear.

5. Clothes containing super control fabrics with Lycra and power-mesh panels can smooth away imperfections.
